This morning we drove out well beyond the outskirts of Vrindavana village. At one point Prabhupada stopped the car and climbed out and began walking across the fields. As we meandered across the uneven fields, a local farmer, the owner of the land, came over to see us. Very respectfully he offered his pranamas and told Srila Prabhupada in Hindi that he considered it a great honor for him and his family to have Prabhupada walk on his land. Prabhupada was very touched by the man's sentiment and mentioned the incident several times later on. He noted that in the West if you tread without permission on someone else's land, they become angry and may even shoot you. How nice, he said, is a culture where the owner approaches and thanks you, considering himself to be blessed.
