I think this is for the fourth time I have come here? So I find you very happy
Prabhupada and I sat up in the first class cabin waiting for takeoff as the other passengers slowly filed past us in the aisle. One man in particular gave us an intense look. With a half-smile he suddenly bent forward and stuck his face next to mine. "How are ya, Ha-ari?" he sneered nastily, with a pronounced American accent. Then he was gone, off to his seat in the economy section. It was an unpleasant experience to say the least. Prabhupada saw it but said nothing.
After a short flight the plane touched down at Charles de Gaulle airport. Within a few minutes we were on a moving walkway through a long airport tunnel, enroute to immigration. We were each standing about two yards apart; I was in the lead, Prabhupada was in the middle, and Harikesa Swami was in the rear. About halfway along the walkway's length I heard a sudden commotion behind; then Harikesa Maharaja and the nasty American from the plane came careening past me. Locked in an unwelcome embrace and tangled up in luggage, noisy threats and curses issued from the demon while Harikesa reproached him.
Their little dance ended as quickly as it began; they suddenly disentangled, and the demon sped off at a fast walk, shouting obscenities and abuses at us. I was amazed, Harikesa was irate, but Prabhupada was serene. Harikesa said that while standing behind Prabhupada, he suddenly felt that he must move forward and shield him. At that very moment the American appeared from behind, deliberately trying to barge into Srila Prabhupada as he went past?but he contacted Harikesa instead.
Prabhupada never said a word about the incident, and it was quickly forgotten. However, it stands as a pointed reminder that no matter how good one's intentions and deeds are, there is always some envious soul going out of his way to make trouble.
Many devotees, led by Bhagavan prabhu, were at the terminal, and as soon as they saw the transcendental form of Srila Prabhupada they burst into kirtana, offering him garlands of fragrant flowers while Bhagavan led the way out to the waiting car. From the airport Prabhupada was driven to the Paris temple for an overnight stay.

As soon as he arrived Prabhupada went into the temple room for darsana. The place was small, but the Deities of Sri Sri Radha-Paris-isvara shone radiantly from Their altar.
After receiving guru-puja from the fifty or sixty devotees, Srila Prabhupada gave a short speech. Allowing one of the devotees to translate sentence by sentence, he explained that Lord Vishnu and His potency is one. But, he explained, there is a third energy?this material world?which is a reflection of the transcendental energy. We all have to work to achieve anything in this reflection, whereas in the spiritual world everything is supplied automatically. "So the more you spiritualize the whole atmosphere," he told the devotees, "the more you become sufficient and happy. This Krishna consciousness movement is for that purpose. People cannot understand it. They think that, 'These people are not working?simply chanting, dancing and eating.' But that is our business." He grinned and the devotees laughed. "Without working, we can have everything sufficiently.
"So stick to this Krishna consciousness. You are already advanced. That is my request; don't deviate. You'll have never any want, that's a fact. It is not my invention, it is the statement of Krishna. Tesham nityabhiyuktanam yoga-kshemam vahamy aham. Nityabhiyukta, those who are constantly engaged in Krishna business, whatever they want, Krishna is personally interested to supply it. So without any hesitation, stick to this Krishna consciousness, everything will be amply supplied. Not that we shall be indolent and lazy. No. We shall utilize our energy for giving service to Krishna. That actually we are engaged. We are not lazy. Every one of us is engaged in some sort of service for Krishna. So that is my request, that I am now getting old, and that you stick to this principle, and you'll remain always happy."
Then he looked out over the devotees with a smile and asked, "I think this is for the fourth time I have come here? So I find you very happy. Continue, and whenever I shall come, I shall see you happy. Thank you very much."
With the devotees cheering all around him, Srila Prabhupada dismounted the vyasasana and took a small elevator to the second floor. The devotees have arranged a small but comfortably appointed room for him, with an adjoining servant's room.
Due to the change in the time zone it was already 12:20 p.m. by the time we settled in. I quickly set up the dictaphone and other desk paraphernalia, and then got ready to give Srila Prabhupada his massage. Harikesa and Bhagavan made arrangements for someone to cook Prabhupada's lunch. Bhagavan prabhu mentioned several ladies who could be possible cooks. Deciding on Parijata dasi, who has cooked for him before, Prabhupada said, "All right, she cooks nice." He told them to make his regular standard fare, "not cumberous" as he put it?rice, (which he stipulated must be well cooked), vegetables, bitter melon and two or three capatis. He also asked for dal which he said could be of any variety, as long as it boiled nicely. "Without being boiled," he said, "it is useless."

When I entered Prabhupada's room to give his evening massage, he came out from the bathroom and went over to an open window to look out for a minute on the neighborhood. He tipped his head up slightly pointing out a few women loitering in the park opposite us. Men were walking slowly past. With a chuckle he said, "In this quarter, there are many prostitutes." Still, he didn't seem disturbed by it because, as he said, it is an important location, in the center of the city.
Prabhupada managed to translate a little during the night, the first work he has done on his books since we left New York.
