Madhudvisa : The first time Prabhupada gave me a personal assignment was in Los Angeles after we had just moved into the La Cienega temple, which was the first church in the history of ISKCON. Before this, in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, we had always operated out of storefronts. That was the modus operandi of the devotees in those days: "Rent a storefront and open a temple." But on La Cienega Boulevard we had rented a fairly good-sized church. I was the treasurer, and Tamal Krishna Maharaj was the president, and we were at loggerheads with each other; somehow or other we were sometimes pulling in different directions. Srila Prabhupada called Tamal and me in together and said, "Why is there a problem?" Tamal said, "Madhudvisa can do the same things I can do. Sometimes he wants to do them, and sometimes I want do them, so we get into conflicts." Srila Prabhupada said, "Let Madhudvisa go to San Francisco and be the temple president there." I thought, "Great. This is a breath of fresh air. I am going to become the temple president in San Francisco, the temple where I originally joined." That was a special responsibility because that's where the Ratha-yatra festival was held. In those days there was no other Ratha-yatra festival on a grand scale. There were some small festivals, but there wasn't even a Ratha-yatra festival in Los Angeles. San Francisco, however, was New Jagannatha Puri and had a tradition of grand Ratha-yatras. So the first personal instruction that I received from Srila Prabhupada was to go to San Francisco, and he also said, "Make this Ratha-yatra even grander. Make it like it is in Jagannatha Puri in India." I went to San Francisco with a feeling of responsibility.
