Udayananda : In 1976 I was on the Radha-Damodar traveling sankirtan party and we all went to Sri Dham Mayapur for the Mayapur festival. One day all eighty of us were sitting in Srila Prabhupada’s room. Prabhupada looked over at me and said, “What are you reading?” I had the second volume Adi Lila of the Caitanya-caritamrita on my lap. I was excited that Srila Prabhupada was talking to me. I exclaimed, “Oh, Srila Prabhupada, this is Caitanya-caritamrita, second volume. It’s the pastimes of Lord Chaitanya with Prakashananda Sariswati. What happened is that Lord Chaitanya was invited to dinner with all these sannyasis. He didn’t want to go but this one brahmin was begging Him to go. So He came in after all the sannyasis were already seated…” I’m telling Prabhupada the whole story in detail. All the bramacharis were looking over their shoulder at me questioning in their minds, “What are you doing?” Then I realized that I was telling the story to the author of the book. He knows what’s in his book. Prabhupada just looked at me. As an example of dhira, of how the pure devotee is so deep, I could not understand his mind. I did not have a clue of whether he was pleased or upset. All I knew was that later on I got a lot of ribbing from my God-brothers.
